Uncooperative Calves

March 5 2014

We managed to get 1/4" of rain from this last little front that came through. Other than that-- zilch. It was enough moisture for me to at least get some piles burned up. I've been doing lots of dozer work in preparation for a prescribed burn. Basically just scraping off a perimeter around Pugmore Pasture again. If we get favorable weather, we'll hopefully get to burn that and the coastal field in the next two weeks. The cows are still on the east side-- and we're still feeding that delicious hay everyday. Most of them came through winter looking ok. We weened about 21 calves 6 weeks ago, and they are looking really nice.  In fact, I was going to haul them in this morning, but they didn't want to leave the coastal field. We had a heck of a time trying to drive them out, but they wouldn't cooperate in the least-- so that's where they stayed. I don't think I've ever not been able to get animals where I needed to get them. So we'll enlist some more cowboys next week and try again. I've set up some cameras with some bales of alfalfa over in the red house pasture. So I'll start getting some good population data on the animals in there. Once that's done, we can start formulating a plan on how to raise some Trophies over there.

We're getting the tractor ready for another hay season--changing out all the fluids and filters etc. Will start plowing the Sudan Field ASAP. If time allows, I'll also get the tractor and plow over to the Red House to plow up that small field there too. I'd like to plant some Soy Peas or something like that for the deer.
