Bull Reunion

8/21/13

We've just about got the Cypress Tree watering system worked out. We had to split it onto two sections because of the distance. Once finished, we'll be able to drive the water truck to one spot and hook up to the pipe and pump water to each of the trees. One truck load of water will deliver about 50 gallons of water to each tree. We'll have to do this anywhere from 1-3 time a week depending on the weather.

The cows are still separated from the bulls, but not for long. We are waiting on just a couple more to have babies. Tomorrow morning we are brining the herd into the pens for a final round of booster vaccines. Soon After which, we will move them over to the East Side for the bull reunion. We will let them graze off the Sudan and Klein Grass fields. This should make them very happy. It's going to be awhile before I can increase the herd numbers. Recovery from the drought is difficult. The upper cow pastures that we rely on quite a bit have been hit the hardest and it will take some effort to bring them back. It gets pretty stressful trying to work out the grazing management when the grass is not there or won't grow. We still have the steer we held back from last year that I intend on butchering for our own freezer. If the cows graze off the Sudan field quick enough, I intend to plant oats in the entire field. This will hopefully provide some additional winter grazing as well as good hunting. It's getting close to that time of year again to start preparing for the hunting season. We'll be doing some deer counts, blind work, etc.
