Spring Rain

March 1 2007

The new fields couldn’t have been sprigged at a better time. We received almost four inches of rain yesterday. The tanks are up, and we have water in places that have been dry for years. The rain also gives us a chance to burn some cedar piles, and we burn as much as we can when it’s this wet. The pole barn is waiting for concrete, the cabin is waiting on electric, and everyone is waiting on the new windmill. On Wednesday, we’ll be one step closer as the well guys are dropping the pipe and the windmill builder is coming out to prepare. Dave is on spring break so we just might get a full week of work out of him. Along with good rain comes fence mending. Along with the other chores, the perimeter fence water gaps need to be checked this week.

Dave and I are going to really start scouting for that bull elk. I hear there’s someone in New Jersey who really wouldn’t mind seeing a pig the next time he’s here among other people, so we’re going to create a pig haven before he arrives. Tommy Jr’s hide and mount are ready so we will send that back with Tom in a couple weeks. I saw some trophy axis bucks today. They are monsters. The cow count as of today is 1 bull, 21 cows, 19 heifers, 4 steers.

The houses are coming along the final steps, and they look great. The old house and barn have been demolished. The old cistern well was saved. I thought it might make a nice wine cellar.
