Butcher House

Sept. 16 2008

Right after you left the last time, we got some good rain, allowing us to get some burning done. We finished burning out what we call whiskey valley. It's that first main valley that goes back to where the whiskey cave is...or was supposed to be. It's looking pretty good. I've been going around with a bunch of grass seed and spreading it over burned areas and pretty much anywhere there is a bare spot.

Lately we've been working on the new fence line that runs by those two tanks in the back. We're getting pretty close to completion on that. It's been a tough job. The ground is not so forgiving over there. It will be nice to be able to start rotating those cows some. We've weaned almost all the calves from their mamas and have them in a separate pasture. We had close to fifty of them. I took a load in 2 weeks ago to sell. 12 calves brought about $6,000, which was my goal, so that was nice. The market is paying well if the calves are very heavy. I think it's because of the price of corn. The feed lots who buy the stock don't want to pay for feeding the calves so they are letting the raisers grow them and are paying about a 1.00 a pound. I plan on taking a small load of calves every week or two for awhile.

We picked up Tecate from the trainer. She's looking really good and did very well with the training. Hurricane Ike completely missed us , so we got zero inches of rain. That was pretty disappointing, especially when the forecasters were predicting 10-11'' of rain just five days before it hitting Texas. So I'm getting ready to cut some more hay next week because there is no rain in sight. We did just get our first cool front though. It was in the 50's this morning and probably won't get higher than low to mid eighty's today. The last pig I've seen was the one you shot, not sure where they went. We've seen some nice bucks though. As soon as we are done with this fence, we'll start getting ready for hunting season.

Work has begun on the butcher house and bunk house, in fact they are raising the walls today on the butcher house. It's going to be a cool place, I bet it becomes the new hangout.
