Bull Drive

5/3/2010

We finished putting out all the fertilizer which totaled about 11 tons. We did the Sudan field, the east side grass fields, the coastal field and some of the grass on the front of the ranch. We also plowed the coastal field to kill the weeds growing in it. I put out some coastal seed with the fertilizer on that field too. I'll be going this week to pick up a bunch of chemical weed killer and we'll start applying that soon too. Mostly I want to cover the front of the ranch where the horses roam.

Marlon has been busy on the Dozer. We lowered the east side tank about a foot, which took care of the basement leakage problem. He's done some more clean up back by all-seasons feeder, and also dammed up another spring back there which is bigger and deeper than the first one. I checked it yesterday and it's still running strong. The corner of the east side where we burned all that cedar and those big stumps where everywhere is all cleaned up now too. We also pushed out a bunch of those big dead oak trees that were near the hay barns on the east side.

We got all the electricity fixed in the horse stables so it's looking very well lit these days. Yesterday, Jerry Eleanor and myself, along with the neighbors who bought the bull, completed the great Bull Drive of 2010. The drive went relatively smoothly. The neighbor told me he would like to buy 5 or 6 of our heifers next year, so that was good to hear. We got all of our herd wormed and vaccinated for this year. The cows are loving the grass. After we worked them last week, I put them up in the corner pasture by the coastal field and let them graze that for a week. This morning, we moved them to the big lake pasture. I'll leave them there a week and then I'll put them in the back for a little while. Or maybe the east side, I haven't decided. The back of Dogleg is starting to look really nice, we're getting lot's of grass coverage where it hasn't been before.

The hogs seem to be coming more and more active around the front of the ranch. They rooted around my chicken coop! I took the AR out yesterday with the dogs to try and get one, but couldn't get a shot. Cash and Carter got after one, but couldn't catch it. I never even got close.
